My friend Roger posed for the Monday drawing group last night. I got quite a nice painting out of the evening, though I am not sure how good a likeness it is.
One thing I tend to do, and am criticized for, is cutting off the top of the head. Sometimes it makes a more interesting composition.
I like it, and I don't mind the head placement: perhaps because we can't see the tops of our own heads, the portrait seems more engaging and sympathetic....In other words, it draws me in.
I gave up New York in early 2005 to see if I could live happily year round in a small village in southwest France. I hoped, by getting away from the constant bombardment of big city distractions, to be able to focus on my own creative work. I see this blog as a bit of a record of this time in my life.
